Steven T. Jones - Guardian-in-Exile
I am leading an effort to keep the Guardian-in-Exile voice and spirit alive through Byline, using the same crowdfunding model that produced our final commemorative issue of the San Francisco Bay Guardian. By supporting the project, you'll hear the progressive news and views that defined the Guardian and other big city alternative-newsweeklies that have also been struggling in this new media landscape.
Once a week, we'll bring you stories by me and many of the writers who have appeared in the pages of the Guardian over the years, from founder Bruce Brugmann to sex columnist Krissy Eliot to the news, arts, and culture writers that animated the Guardian during its final years.
It will be a mix of breaking news and blasts from the past, with calls to propose and support deeper investigative projects along the way. This will be an interactive Guardian for the digital age, with opportunities for supporters to propose topics and targets for Guardian-in-Exile writers to take on.
One regular feature in this stream will be a serialized memoir project that Jones is calling The Last Guardian, which will expose and explain how the Bay Guardian lost the battle for the soul of San Francisco and what can be done to reclaim it from the greedy capitalists, corrupt politicians, apolitical young techies, and others who seek to transform the city into a bland playground for the rich and boring.
