Senators leading the United States probe into Russia's attack on democracy confirm Russian offensive

The last paragraph of Alternative War, released in August 2017 reads:

"It doesn’t even matter how the sorry Trump or Brexit sagas conclude because – though I accept it is a challenging task for everyone – the reality we have to face up to, acknowledge, and fully understand is World War Three had been fought and won before we even noticed anything was wrong. It was not, in the end, the nuclear conflict feared for so many years but, rather, this only too real and wholly alien hybrid conflict being fought with the mixed methods of technology and psychology – disinformation, destabilisation, and the deployment of insidious, deniable and detached assets instead of missiles, infantry, and artillery. A war fought purely with lies – which Russia only won because it never made the official declaration."

Once this may have sounded like a flight of fancy, a conspiracy theory. But it is not and never was. It has been confirmed and validated almost every day since its release.

Yesterday was no exception.

" America has climbed the largest obstacle: acknowledgement."

United States Senators leading the Intelligence Committee's probe into Russia held a press conference yesterday, giving an update on their investigation. With every word from Capitol Hill, a crowdfunded book claimed its place as an integral part of modern history.

While the committee is a long way from finishing its work, with Senator Burr saying there is "more work to be done as relates to collusion" between the Trump campaign and Russia, he added: "The Russian Intelligence Service is determined, clever, and I recommend that every campaign take this very seriously."

America has climbed the largest obstacle: acknowledgement.

Crucially, Senator Warner confirmed the US was not alone in being targeted by Putin's Kremlin, saying: "Active Measures efforts did not end on election day 2016. They were not only geared at the United States of America...and we need to be on guard."

Warner is correct. The Russian campaign - a hybrid offensive - extended to Europe and is continuing even now, in Catalonia and beyond.

One of the common areas still subject to inquiry is how the Trump campaign interacted with Russian efforts. One element of this relates to the 'dark posts' deployed to influence Facebook users on all manner of issues.

While these are yet to be officially released, activists have invested in locating some of the records for public consumption already. One of the groups specifically targeted with the dark posts was Black Lives Matter, which is highly relevant to the doctrine set out in Alternative War.

This area of the hybrid offensive is largely covered in the book, explaining how Russia worked together with detached and deniable partner assets, including the far-right and those behind the big data companies used by the Trump Campaign - and here in Britain, during the Brexit referendum.

The neccessity of these relationships has been set in fresh, independent context by Michael Morell, who spent his career at the CIA including a stint as acting director of the agency.

In a recent interview, he told reporters Russia needed to be provided with data for microtargeting. "They do not have the analytic capability to do that themselves," Morell said.

Russia have been quick to highlight the bulk of their Facebook adverts discovered so far were seen after election day, and have pointedly made efforts to drive this narrative through their UK Embassy's Twitter feed - a geographically illogical move, without the context Alternative War provides.

With the diverse range of adverts aimed at specific states, and at excacerbating divisions across all manner of public groups, Russian denials ring hollow. In particular when set against their broader campaign of hacking, alternative news, and leaks. Russia know they have been caught and all that's left is more deceit.

The doctrine behind Russia's action to generate lasting internal conflict comes straight from a playbook written in the late 1990s: Dugin's Future of Geopolitics. In it, the white supremacist strategist specifically sets out a vision for the US as is documented in Alternative War:

"As regards the US itself, Dugin outlines how “Russia should use its special services within the borders of the United States to fuel instability and separatism, for instance, provoke Afro-American racists.” It adds that Russia should: “Introduce geopolitical disorder into internal American activity, encouraging all kinds of separatism and ethnic, social and racial conflicts, actively supporting all dissident movements – extremist, racist, and sectarian groups, thus destabilizing internal political processes in the US. It would also make sense simultaneously to support isolationist tendencies in American politics.” Through RT they’d done this as far back as Occupy, at least, and moving forward to Bannon’s Breitbart and Trump’s White House, it is impossible not to agree Russia has succeeded."

To confirm the Senate's grasp of what has happened, Senator Burr said: "It seems that the overall theme of the Russian involvement in the U.S. election was to create chaos at every level."

In the wake of the third world conflict, the Alternative War, recognising what happened is the first step in preparing for a new kind of peace.

An eduring one, however, will not come without cost.
