The Trial of Mazher Mahmood
For over 20 years Mazher Mahmood was one one of the most famous journalists in the UK. The winner of multiple awards for a string of exclusives mostly obtained in his persona as the "fake sheikh" when he pretended to be a rich Middle Eastern businessman to fool the unsuspecting into revealing secrets or revealing crimes.. He has claimed to have secured the criminal convictions of over 90 people.
In 2014 however he was suspended from his role at the Sun on Sunday after Judge Alistair McCreath threw out a drug case against R&B singer and X-Factor star Tulisa Contostavlos based on secret filming by Mahmood's team. The journalist is now facing trial at London's Old Bailey for allegedly "conspiring to pervert the course of justice."
The trial, due to begin in September, promises to give a fascinating insight into a tabloid culture epitomised by Mahmood and his associates. As well as live-reporting the case via twitter byline will be running regular columns giving the background to the case and analysis of the evidence and it's wider implications for the UK press.
