Alternative War: A Book In The Public Interest
Byline Media teams up with publisher Cynefin Road to produce a unique book in the public interest.

Byline Media teams up with independent publisher Cynefin Road to produce a book in the public interest and only you can make it happen.

Meanwhile, of course, the journalism continues uninterrupted.

“This project brings together independent investigative journalism, independent publishing, and you, all working together to do something truly good in this world of ours. The first Byline collaboration of its kind, the aim is simple: to write, produce, and distribute the full book of Alternative War – something which could potentially become the most important book of our times.”

Byline Media provides a vital, independent platform to bring crucial stories and investigations to the public with no barriers. No editorial skew and absolutely no advertisers to appease. Nothing between you and the news, just as the tagline says.

Byline provides an essential home for truly independent journalism in a world of fake news and billionaires serving their own interests through their media groups. Most importantly of all, Byline and the journalists who write here, like me, are funded directly by you.

We are also at the pinnacle of ethics in journalism – every Byline journalist is fully signed up to the new Impress regulations, which ensure that our standards are second to none, in everything we do.

“Byline provides an essential home for truly independent journalism in a world of fake news”

I am an independent investigative journalist and was recruited to Byline in early 2017. My personal history is not what you would call standard.

I was a police officer for a decade and left Scotland Yard in 2014 after sparking the House of Commons inquiry which exposed the national manipulation of the crime statistics. Life afterwards was quite the journey, culminating in my bankruptcy and a life on the poverty line.

Losing everything brought out the fight in me.

I am now an NUJ member, signed up to the Impress regulations and have been chasing Russia, the far-right, and their creations: Brexit and Trump. I have also started a small, independent publishing house, Cynefin Road.

My column, Alternative War, has grown in a short space of time to create a substantial, international following and is my work has garnered attention in the established, mainstream media too.

During the course of my investigations, I uncovered information so bleak I was compelled to submit it in the form of a seventy-page statement to the UK and EU Parliaments, NATO, and the FBI.

Independent journalism is now the front line in a war most people don’t even know has started.

“Independent journalism is now the front line in a war most people don’t even know has started.”

This project brings together independent investigative journalism, independent publishing, and you, all working together to do something truly good in this world of ours.

The first Byline collaboration of its kind, the aim is simple: to write, produce, and distribute the full book of Alternative War – something which could potentially become the most important book of our times (details below).

I believe that, working together, we can make this book the number one best-seller in every Western country across the world by Christmas 2017.

Traditional publishing has been explored but has been dismissed on single factor: time. It would take up to 12 months or more for a traditional publishing house to process and launch Alternative War and this is not an acceptable delay given the content. Byline and Cynefin Road provide a unique opportunity to change this structure with your support and ensure the public interest is best served.

The stage one funding target includes all of the production costs, including final writing, editing, proofing, typesetting, graphic design, statutory library copies, ISBNs, proofs, distribution chain entries and access to retailers across the globe. Every supporter will receive one of the limited first run books, in the format they select according to their funding option.

The date the first edition’s publication – to project supporters only – will be the 20th of September 2017.

The general release, the second edition, will be launched globally to the public on the 31st of October 2017.

The stage two funding target ensures that 500 copies can be sent, with personal covering letters, to elected representatives and other key officials across the world, aiming to spark the conversations – and potentially actions - at an international level which are so desperately needed.

“The first Byline collaboration of its kind, the aim is simple: to write, produce, and distribute the full book of Alternative War – something which could potentially become the most important book of our times”

About the book:

“A journalist’s investigation exposes the alternative conflict of World War Three has already started - a hybrid battle being fought behind the scenes of Brexit and Trump which threatens democracy across the West. The dark truth is: Russia never made the official declaration.”

A former police officer, who sparked a messy parliamentary inquiry which exposed the wholesale manipulation of serious crime figures by the police in the UK, found himself in the President’s bunker in Mexico, knowing he would always be hungry for the truth.

After paying the price for whistleblowing, he launched himself into the fray in the wake of the Brexit vote which rocked Europe. Tracking the disturbing narratives coming from the Alt-right, he stumbled into a world of psychometric voter manipulation and disinformation, which led him to Sweden to investigate the truth about crime and immigration after inexplicable comments made by US President Donald Trump.

Sweden unlocked the truth of an undeclared, hybrid conflict being waged by Russia and a host of partners – including hackers, leakers, and far-right politicians. Following the trail across the EU and to the White House, he exposed a dark web of Russian finance and data-laundering undermining democracy across the West.

In the wake of a worldwide cyberattack on critical infrastructure, the evidence of collusion and collaboration was sent to the UK and EU Parliaments, NATO, and the FBI, telling the stark truth of a war which nobody knew was happening.

Alternative War is a publication in the public interest to make sure the world knows what it faces, and to make sure future generations are never taken by surprise again.

About The Audience:

Due to the nature of the publication, style of writing, and the topics covered, Alternative War will be broadly accessible to all groups across the UK, US, EU, Australia, and all other English speaking countries.

Initially, it is likely the interest would come the politically engaged, so-called ‘saboteurs’ in the UK and the ‘resistance’ movement in the US. The content will naturally piggy-back on any future developments in a potential impeachment of Trump and will maintain momentum in the UK as Brexit takes place. The same continued interest is likely across the EU and in Australia, where psychometrics are being deployed in politics for the first time.

There are no readers excluded, from the pub level to academic and political.

“Alternative War is a publication in the public interest to make sure the world knows what it faces, and to make sure future generations are never taken by surprise again.”

The final draft of the book will be complete and ready for the start of the editing process by the 1st of August 2017.

Alternative War is a full-length non-fiction work. Currently, the rough draft contains around 90,000 words, and this will increase in the drafting process.

Chapter Outline (Subject to Variation in Final Draft and Describes Only Barebones of Content):

Opening Quote:

“I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones.” - Einstein

Foreword:

A brief introduction to my exit from the Met Police after the House of Commons inquiry into crime statistics and my departure on bad terms, which led to the end of my marriage, a close brush with alcohol, and a trip to Mexico, sponsored by the federal police, which helped me realise I would always be an awkward seeker of the truth and led me to enter journalism.

Summary of my investigative findings in four bullet points

One:

A complete introduction to the concept of Hybrid Conflicts drawing on NATO and UN documentation, going back to the origins of the Capstone concept and the Tallinn experiment, as well as the 2017 STRATCOM summit in Prague and the associated Kremlin Watch assessment.

Two:

A detailed explanation of the EU response to hybrid threats and their ongoing defensive operations, including discussions with their defence spokesperson. EU’s STRATCOM initiative is explored in detail and the chapter also leads into an exploration of the origins of the use of social media being weaponised which covers the story of HB Gary, a federal contractor hacked by Wikileaks in 2011, and an interview with a former employee. This feeds into later exploration of psychometrics and the company Cambridge Analytica.

Three:

A detailed introduction to Sweden, and the reasons for my investigative trip in the wake of the Stockholm terror attack – which resulted from a Twitter spat with an alt-right figure over false reports on crime and immigration in the country (initiated by Trump), and led me to crowdfund an expedition to report the truth.

Four:

A complex political introduction to Sweden, covering the importance of epistemology, centred around an interview with Academic and Politician Nils Karlsson, currently the deputy mayor of Malmo. The chapter focuses on drawing out the truth in populist narratives, and establishing a background to sources of fake news and disinformation.

Five:

A complex introduction to crime and terrorism in Sweden centred around an interview with leading criminologist Manne Gerell which explores the links between immigration and crime and draws out the use of alternative narratives in driving negative media coverage.

Six:

A detailed background on immigration demographics and further exploration of the right wing influence in Sweden. Also explores the advent of extremist violence, comparing both Islamic terrorism and neo-nazi terrorism in the country.

Seven:

A detailed account of a visit to one of Sweden’s alleged no go zones, which dovetails into an unannounced visit to the police station where two leading police officers are interviewed without appointment, discussing crime, immigration, terror, and multi-agency working. The Stockholm terror attack is also discussed. The chapter then moves back out into the streets, interviewing ordinary swedes across these topics, and discussing Trump and fake news.

Eight:

Following the on the ground investigation, this chapter recaps and delves into the background of the country’s political situation, and the rise of fake news and the far-right. The links between the international far-right and Russia are exposed, including corrupt links to parliament, and Swedish government policy begins to unravel the connections and feeds back into the NATO and EU concepts of Hybrid conflict and active counter measures. Sweden is the key which unlocks the rest of the investigation into the alternative war.

Nine:

Returning from Sweden I began to explore our own right-wing and how it has influenced the Brexit referendum. Following the announcement of an investigation into the referendum by the Electoral Commission, specifically focused on Leave.EU, I received confidential documents outlining the full scope of the investigation and that it specifically relates to the donation of services in kind by Cambridge Analytica, an American psychological warfare company used by Trump in his campaign.

Ten:

Digging deeper, I investigated the international data-laundering and hacking market, including crypto-currency, which incorporates leaks designed to affect election outcomes. The chapter begins to explore links between Farage and Le Pen, Farage and Assange, and Russia and Wikileaks, while also discovering the UK government was fully aware of foreign interference in both the Brexit campaign and the 2015 election.

Eleven:

Investigating the web of companies behind Leave.EU and Cambridge Analytica, using the ICO database and Companies House, intricate links between both Trump and Brexit are exposed. The findings are referred to the ICO who subsequently triggered an investigation into international data-laundering highlighted in the report, along with the collection of information by the nefarious use of survey data. The chapter also begins to explore Trump’s use of favourable executive orders which support the investigation’s findings, and further links between Leave.EU and other companies, including some within the Panama Papers, start to build a broader picture.

Twelve:

Cambridge Analytica responds to the investigation with an unfounded press complaint which results in more information being uncovered, which includes their own admissions of the use of psychometric and harvesting data through Facebook, contrary to their own denials. They were, at the time, also aware that the investigation findings had been referred to both the ICO and the electoral commission.

Thirteen:

A detailed exploration of Marine Le Pen’s financial links to Russia, links to Farage and UKIP, and the details of financial investigations into both parties are explored following detailed investigations and discussions with OLAF – the European Union’s Fraud Unit – who assist with inquiries.

Fourteen:

This chapter explains the backdrop of changing terrorism across Europe and the impact of attacks such as Nice, Westminster, Stockholm and Berlin, on the far-right narrative. The chapter also explores specific discrepancies and differences between these attacks and other IS attacks. The chapter also delves deeper into the hacking arm of the Russian GRU, who have posed as IS in online cyber attacks, and discusses the broadly known concept of false flag attacks.

Fifteen:

This chapter follows a trail of business links, both political and related to strategic resources, from Leave.EU to Lesotho, a small African country, closely tied to Russia, where Leave.EU have been actively engaged in lobbying parliament and courting the right wing. The countries elections are due in June, so the result will be added prior to completion of the book. The social media accounts of key Leave.EU figures are found to be incredibly useful in following their activities.

Sixteen:

This chapter explores the connection between Leave.EU, the governor of Mississipi and Russia, bringing in members of the Trump administration currently under investigation for Russia links. In a complex web of lobby groups the link between Trump and Alfa Bank is explored in detail, as is his shift in foreign policy to a pro-russia narrative. The Gazprom deal is also covered. Farage is highlighted as the potential go between in respect of Julian Assange, on behalf of Trump and Russia.

Seventeen:

This chapter explores the world cyber attack, which impacted the NHS, in detail, and disproves the Russian led theory of North Korean responsibility. In fact, the attack is linked with moderate to high probability to the Russian state hackers of the GRU, APT28. The chapter includes a detailed technical interview with cyber security experts Fire Eye.

Eighteen:

This chapter explores, in detail, the Trump leaks regarding Israeli intelligence operatives and on the positioning of his submarines in the sea of Japan. The background of Sergey Lavrov is explored, and a former naval officer discusses the implications of the submarine leak in a grim but colourful fashion. The chapter is currently being amended to incorporate the leaks associated with the Manchester bombing.

Nineteen:

This chapter explores a specific joint report by the NSA and the FBI which covers the hacking operations of APT28, and their FSB colleagues, APT29 in detail. It goes on to interview a Ukranian expert in disinformation campaigns, with specific discussions around effective and ineffective countermeasures to hybrid threats. The chapter also cover the establishment of the Finnish centre for cyber security which is directly engaged in countering the hybrid threat.

Twenty:

In this concluding chapter, a declassified CIA report is explored in detail for the first time, and is found to largely confirm the key components of the whole investigation and the original NATO and Kremlin Watch assessments of Russian hybrid conflict activity. Putin is directly blamed within the report for ordering the hybrid offensive. A brief outline of Russia as a criminal state is included.

Closing Quote:

To be confirmed.

“Alternative War is a full-length non-fiction work.”

I hope you can support this unique team effort and look forward to working together in the public interest on this project.

Risks and Challenges

At this stage, the book is almost at the stage of completion in terms of writing. There are no libel or other legal issues associated with the work. The distribution and sales channels are already established, so there are no access barriers to be addressed. The greatest risk to the project is failing to achieve the funding target, which will mean the project has to be abandoned or set back - the very reason traditional publishing was dismissed.
